U-Harmony Part 10Twilight Sparkle rolled out of bed and hit the floor with an unceremonious thud. Her eyes shot open, then narrowed as she took stock of her situation and realized that her room was flooded by a frankly unnecessary level of illumination. She might have cursed the sun, if not for the fact that she held its controller in such high regard. Instead, she took a moment to try to convince herself that the fall was somehow intentional, even clever. It was certainly a more effective way to wake up than her alarm spells; judging by the angle of the sunbeams assaulting her, she'd slept through at least three of those already. U-Harmony Part 9 (Dream Sequence)Twilight Sparkle looked up from her magazine. The mare had never read Paint Drying Monthly before, and with luck, she would never have to do it again. Unfortunately, no other reading material had appeared on any of the coffee tables arrayed about the waiting room, so she turned her attention back to the pages with a slow sigh. It was, at the very least, an excuse not to look at the beige walls or the generic landscape paintings that hung from them. If Twilight had been forced to guess the motivation of the interior designer, she would have gone with 'sadism'. Recently, I learned a very important lesson about friendship, and love, and all life. I learned about a treasure that is easy to break, difficult to repair, and infinitely precious. I learned about a gift that most ponies give warily, if at all; nothing else has such power to hurt its giver when rejected or neglected or misused.

Merely a Mare, Final Interlude: Love"Well. Here I am again, and there you still are." Heavens Sparkle said. He had never heard his own voice sound so weary. His mouth twisted in distaste. Still, it was better than his old fire and bite, more justified at the very least. He leaned forward, leaning the tip of his horn against the black marble obelisk before him and releasing a long, slow breath. He stood in a place of rest, but such repose was not for him. He couldn't bring himself to cast off his burdens so easily. Life was a more fitting punishment.

What the Future Holds

Merely a Mare is complete. For awhile, I didn't know if I was ever going to be able to say that, but I finally got it done. 50k words. Crazy. Thanks for all the views and comments on it, and I'm glad so many of you seemed to enjoy it.

Anyway, now that that is behind me, what's next? I'll mostly be splitting my attention between U-Harmony and the initial planning, brainstorming, and outline for my next really long fic. My intention is to get relatively detailed outlines done for the whole fic before I start fleshing out individual chapters, so that the whole fic flows together more smoothly than Merely a Mare did. I'm broadening my horizons by trying my hand at something that doesn't involve shipping: a long Lovecraft-inspired dark adventure fic featuring the Mane 6 and a certain heroic pegasus. The tentative title for the project is 'Daring Do and the Journey to the Center of Equestria'.
